Why Newborns Benefit From Chiropractic Care

Your baby just went through the most physically demanding experience of their life. Birth — regardless of how it went — places significant forces on a newborn's head, neck, and upper spine. These forces can create subtle misalignments (subluxations) that interfere with nervous system function before your baby even takes their first breath outside the womb.

This doesn't mean something went wrong. It means birth is intense, and your baby's body may need gentle support to function at its best from the start. It’s the first step in a journey of care that continues throughout childhood.

Birth Trauma & the Nervous System

The term "birth trauma" doesn't necessarily mean a traumatic birth. It refers to the physical stress placed on a baby's body during delivery — stress that varies depending on the circumstances.

Prolonged labor, rapid delivery, vacuum or forceps extraction, C-section, cord wrapping, and unusual positioning can all increase the physical demands on your baby's upper cervical spine. Even uncomplicated vaginal births involve significant forces on the head and neck.

When these forces create subluxation in the upper cervical area, they interfere with the nerve pathways that control feeding, digestion, sleep, immune function, and your baby's ability to calm and regulate. The result often shows up as symptoms that seem unconnected to the spine — but are directly related to nervous system function.

What We Look For in Your Baby

Parents bring their newborns to us for many reasons. Some come because they're experiencing specific challenges. Others come for a wellness check after birth just to make sure everything is functioning well.

The most common concerns we see in infants include difficulty latching or breastfeeding, excessive fussiness or inconsolable crying, reflux, frequent spitting up, or silent reflux, trouble sleeping or only sleeping when held, a head tilt or preference for turning one direction, tension in the body (arching, clenching fists, stiffness), and slow weight gain.

How Gentle Is a Baby's Adjustment?

This is the question every parent asks & it's absolutely the right one!

Adjustments for newborns use fingertip pressure only. We're talking about the same amount of pressure you'd use to check whether a tomato is ripe. There's no cracking, no twisting, no sudden movements. Most babies relax during the adjustment and many fall asleep.

You can be holding your baby or right next to them throughout the entire process. We explain everything before we do it, and we never move faster than you're comfortable with!

When to Bring Your Baby In

There's no wrong time. Many families bring their newborn in within the first week or two of life — especially if birth was difficult or if feeding challenges are present. Others come when a specific concern arises.

Signs it's time to schedule include any of the concerns listed above, a birth that involved intervention (vacuum, forceps, C-section), a desire for a baseline nervous system check after delivery, or a referral from your midwife, doula, or lactation consultant. Many moms schedule their own postpartum care for the same visit, recovering alongside their baby.

FAQs

Find answers to your most pressing questions about our chiropractic services for children and families.

How soon after birth can a baby see a chiropractor?

As soon as you're ready. We see babies within their first days of life. There's no minimum waiting period — and earlier assessment means earlier support if it's needed.

How gentle is an adjustment for a newborn?

Extremely gentle. We use only fingertip pressure — about the same you'd use to test a ripe tomato. There's no cracking or force involved.

What are signs my baby might need chiropractic?

Feeding difficulty, excessive crying, reflux, sleep challenges, head tilting, body tension, and slow weight gain are the most common signs. If your baby had a difficult or assisted birth, a nervous system check is always a good idea.

Can chiropractic help with breastfeeding difficulties?

Yes. Many breastfeeding challenges are related to tension in the baby's jaw, neck, or upper spine — often from birth. Gentle adjustments that release this tension can improve latch, comfort, and feeding efficiency.
